For the 17 of you out there who use Diner’s Club Rewards, you’ll want to pay attention…

My company uses Diner’s Club for our corporate cards so naturally I’m going to rack up a bunch of Diner’s Club Rewards during my business travel. I didn’t mind this because I could transfer Club Rewards to a number of different airlines and hotels at a decent enough rate.

Previously, most of the Diner’s transfer partners had a relatively low minimum transfer amount. For example, you only needed 1,250 Club Rewards to transfer to 1,000 American Airlines miles. And if I’m not mistaken, transfers to British Airways were always 1:1. Anyhow, I always relied on Diner’s to top of my account balances to score a great redemption — 1,000 miles here and 1,000 there. It was easy and reliable.

Now, that’s all changed.

Diner’s Club quietly increased the minimum amount needed for transfers and not by a small amount. Remember that 1,250:1,000 American Airlines rate? Yeah, the minimum is now 5,375 Club Rewards. This means that if you need 3,000 AA miles to snag an award ticket and you only have 4,000 Diner’s Club Rewards, you’re out of luck.

And it’s not just American Airlines…

I am definitely sad to see this latest development. If you have a few thousand Club Rewards and were hoping to transfer to a partner, you’ll want to keep this in mind because you may find yourself boxed out completely.

Wow, that is unpleasant. A few months ago, I noticed a stealth devaluation where transfers to Alaska were no longer 1:1. Now there’s more bad news.
